Yes I was a former beauty journalist, and rubbed shoulder with Andy Lee, Addy Lee, David Gan, Clarence Lee, Dily Wang, Marjorie Teo-Alridge, Ashley Isham and Agnes B et al... Used to be seen at fashion shows/ parties and beauty product launches and overseas press trips... Those were the days when I enjoyed every bit of the excitement.

As for the products-- I heart White Lucent SWL Eye Cream. The moisturiser is not drying at all (some brightening/whitening products' formulae usurp skin moisture) which was really comforting to know; and my skin looks more radiant after 3 months of usage. I guess no one will call me an aboriginal when I next visit Taiwan-- yes, I get that all the time because of my yellow-toned skin! :S

艺术无价~如获至宝

I bought a Samsui Head (orange rocker), stoneware, 红头巾雕像作品-- 黄荣庭遗作

I bought a piece of Ng Eng Teng, a piece of Singapore history and an evidence of the 1970s. Thanks to my friend YL who curated and recommended the piece! I have every intention of buying a nice glass encased side table so when you look into the table surface, you find the samsui face. Or, it can be besides the phone, rock it when I feel bored.

I first budgeted for "Hen with Head" another piece but it has been sold, and from what was left, this is quite an iconic collectible piece. I did not want to buy "Thumb" erotica art form. Woman figure appeals to me.

Yes I hope it appreciates in time to come. Because you cannot possibly put his big sculptures at home, they are commercial works usually. So such small figures are good for home display. Moreover Samsui women is part of Singapore heritage. At least this was how I convinced myself to part the money on impulse :D

In the early 1970s Ng Eng Teng entered a light-hearted
phase, producing a series of roly-poly faces and
rocking torsos which demonstrate the whimsical side
of his character. They are upturned faces and
abstracted torsos, universally appealing and fun
objects created by a clever transformation and
simplification of parts of the human body. They are
delightfully playful floor mobiles which invite the
spectator to a hands-on participation, oscillating or
gyrating at a touch, and regaining their stability by
employing the ancient balancing principle of the
Chinese bu dao doll. In some, pellets of clay or
cement, sometimes as moveable eyes, are left inside
so that a rattling sound ensues when they are rocked.

Enter the world of Ng Eng Teng

An ongoing exhibition of the works by the late artist reveals his interest in seeing how his craft can become art

About 190 small sculptures and 22 paintings by one of Singapore's most prolific and well-known sculptors, the late Ng Eng Teng, are being displayed at his alma mater, the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa).

The exhibition, titled Fantastic Universe: The Imagination Of Ng Eng Teng, is on at the school's Lim Hak Tai Gallery till April 25.

Almost all the works are for sale. The prices for the sculptures range from $300 to $30,000, while those for paintings are between $8,500 and $20,000.

All the works belong to Ng's family who, Nafa says, decided to release them after careful consideration. This was mainly due to storage limitations and the lack of resources to maintain an exhaustive archive of Ng's work.

A portion of the sales proceeds will be donated to Nafa and the remaining funds are likely to be used to set up a scholarship or foundation in Ng's name. Discussions for this are ongoing.

Speaking of the timing of the exhibition, MsBridget Tracy Tan, director of art and corporate knowledge at Nafa, says: 'Ng was Nafa's alumnus and his place in the history of the academy's artistic evolution is seminal and deeply rooted.

'Nafa is the only art school that teaches ceramics with access to a gas-firing kiln in the public domain and we have always wanted to do a show to highlight Ng's importance.'

Ng died from pneumonia in 2001, aged 67. Over a 40-year career, he created works ranging from monumental public sculptures to intimate pieces in bronze and ceramics, many of which are on display in this exhibition.

Also a gifted painter and potter, he favoured two distinct styles - rounded, evocative sculptures based on the human form, and angular geometric shapes. His huge sculptures of mother and child often left the viewer with a sense of peace, while many smaller pieces were imbued with a wicked sense of humour.

A Cultural Medallion recipient, he studied at Nafa before learning sculpture in England. He worked as a designer at an Irish pottery and created visual aids for the International Planned Parenthood Federation before becoming a full- time artist.

He donated more than 1,000 of his works to the National University of Singapore and the Ng Eng Teng Gallery was opened there in 1998.

Ms Tan says this exhibition adds to what is on display at the university. 'Some of the works being featured in this show are a little unusual and possibly a little rare,' she says.

'Ng's legacy is more than what can be seen in the works he donated. The works here demonstrate that he was interested in both the limits and the potential of his craft to become art.

'He stretched both the physical conditions and the imaginative possibilities to create accessories and objects with a rich range of expressions.'

Also featured in this exhibition are the ciment fondue marquettes of the Changi Airport sculptures: Success and Achievement that are collectively known as the Spirit of Man. The ciment fondue versions are handmade and would have been hand-formed by the artist.

Says Ms Tan: 'We often know Ng to be a ceramist whose works have symbolic geometric values or as a sculptor who enjoyed humour and wit in his play of physical forms.

'But he was a great thinker in dogged pursuit of the next unattainable ideal. Which is why he was so prolific, producing thousands of objects in his lifetime.'

Went to the exhibition last Sat, and to my surprise, over 200 pieces of his stoneware and oil paintings were put up for sale! Price ranges from S$300 to S$1200 for small sculpture pieces and S$4000 for an oil painting.

Seeing his work is like entering the time tunnel and reminiscence what Singapore was like in the 1950s, 60s and 90s.

Featuring works by the late Dr Ng Eng Teng (1934 - 2001), the exhibition will illustrate aspects of the prolific career of this renowned Singaporean sculptor and painter. As a sculptor, Dr Ng was known for his figurative sculptures in many parts of Asia and Australia. His legacy includes the Mother and Child bronze sculptor located in front of Orchard Parade Hotel and The Explorer located at Singapore Art Museum. His outstanding achievements and contributions to the Singapore art scene also garnered him the Cultural Medallion in 1981. The exhibition will showcase close to 200 pieces of small sculptures and over 20 paintings, unfolding the stylistic transitions of a creative and dedicated practice that defined both the art and life of this singular personality.

因为是19世纪建成的古城，因此房子都有80年或上百年的历史。多以水泥打造，冬暖夏凉，简单的线条充满先祖智慧的结晶。走过“阿嘉的家”、“茂伯的家”、“友子奶奶的家”与老城门，一代代的历史，传宗接代的礼俗，经过时间的洗礼，留下来的国宝绝不轻易跟着新时代而溜走。

站在逝去的光辉当中，如果我对谁有无限的思念，将之寄出，或者可以随着太平洋伴随的海风，随风而逝。

气球

等待爱情就像一颗空气球，原本偏平又安静地躺在桌面上，仰望着天空，想飞到天上会是什么感觉，会看到什么不一样的风景。

然后一阵风吹过，气球充起了气来。气球和风开始翩翩共舞着，一晃一步，前后快乐地拉扯着。眼见能飞到天上的希望越来越大，气也膨胀了许多，身体轻了许多。但气球不敢飞得太高，它仍小心翼翼地把一只手抓牢在地面上。虽然想念那一阵风，但深怕漂上去后，没有了风的守护，会在大气层爆开来，四分五裂、死无完尸。

气球早已知道，不是地面不好，只是偶尔换换风景线，看到赏心悦目的景色会更好。

最终，气球灰心和失望了。它泄了所有的气，放风自己去追逐，自己则打回原形，保持自己那个可爱的形状。

被别人称为败犬，有些女性毫无所谓，有些却非常在意。毕竟样样都了得，唯独感情空白，仿佛是艾基利斯之踵的人生致命伤，想到有可能要孤独一生，心情就变得阴霾。

为了极力摆脱败犬魔咒，一些女性往往在很大的心理压力下努力找寻对象。然而，欲速则不达并非没有道理，越是仓促、越是强迫，感情就越不能开花结果，怎么办？

预(寓)言媒体未来 The Future of Media

50年后没有报纸，报纸将会是摆在博物院的馆藏。

这是28岁的我的寓言。到时，78岁眼花、近视深的我将叫我的外籍看护（如果那时候还有第三世界国家这回事）帮我从Kindle或iPhone第80代上下载，并打印出来，我才有办法看。不然，我的孙子都是直接从数码媒体和网络阅读；从电视节目吸收讯息。

Bite-sized短小精悍的讯息，因为在资讯四面八方涌进、四通八达的未来世界里，人们的时间有限。只要知道消息、消息来源和对自己有什么影响经已足够。在那一个讲求个人化personalised的世界里，大众媒体（everything to everyone）的需求已经荡然无存，而是讲求适合自己的资讯。

因此，媒体网站的收费方式可以是免费提供主要新闻，一些生活/娱乐/体育等interest范畴的新闻属于tailor-made量身定制性质，需要订阅。就像订阅杂志一样。对，杂志，也可能走进历史的黑影之中。

会沾染污黑手指的报纸已经是上个20世纪的不文明产物了。而且，100页报纸和100页的杂志非常站位；储存空间有限的未来怎能容得下。而且，100页的资料，有多少是你想知道的，有什么是相关的？少用纸印刷也减低成本，通过电子发布精美的排版。相信我，到那个时候，下载速度会像magic一样–0.000005秒眨眼间垂手可得。

沟通的媒介改变，是硬体趋前的象征。并不代表或意味媒体业者将失业，或失去重要性。我们还是要采拮新闻和资讯，但讲求的是快、狠、准。谁有时间等报纸隔夜印刷、明天才读到昨天爆发禽流感、猪流感、乱七八糟的瘟疫。

传统媒体，迎接挑战。Are we ready? 科技进步，媒体企业也要突破思维求进步，想怎么赚大钱。

21世纪末的预言（寓言）和现在现实落成还有一段时间的差距可以做准备，和等智能手机与电视普及化。在我78岁来临前，还是让我继续沾污我的指头、悠闲翻报纸、慢速度自己过滤我想要的资讯吧。或是，继续用iPhone浏览阅读Straitstimes.com和mypaper.sg的新闻。

切记，新（数码报）习惯可以培养；旧（翻报）习惯也可以改变。

这个10年

现在2009年，4年大学，5年记者的交叉点。从2000年进入新纪元开始，这个世纪注定是一个不一样的年代。有了电脑，有了网路高速公路，有了数码技术，凡事都讲求快、更快、非常快。

因为离开这里，开始收拾办公室东西，从5年前刚进报馆的《晚报》时代东西整理起。蛮惊讶我竟然找回以前的感觉，仿佛我失忆被唤醒。从一本本采访簿看来，我当时一定很忙碌，一个月换一本。把一本连接一本的采访簿排开，很好看。里头写了什么，没时间深究潦草的笔迹，只在踟蹰要不要把它们扔掉销毁，随风飘逝？

找到以前登上的Pressline封面，和《我报》创始前的mock-up。这些努力、理想和当初的奋斗，只成回忆。再看看上新闻课和媒体法律课时，我的笔迹是那么漂亮，有力度和诚意。

2000年进入本地大学念书，2004年毕业，在大学里不知外面的世界如何，专心完成一个接一个的module，和撰写文化题目的论文。踏出社会，进入晚间报章的门槛，有一班好同事互相扶持；后来，很开心来到心仪的《我报》，磨练我的文字。

回首一张张讨论《我报》会是什么模样的计划书、brainstorm点子的纸张……热血沸腾。时间飞逝，事件压缩，现在怎么看都和3年前开报“面目全非”，人事几番新。

我负责的栏目多而广，约会和访问安排得满满，天南地北都去。认识的商家越多，文件堆积如山，都来不及打开来读，又是一份。产品、邀约、饭局接踵而来，多、多、多。我慢慢燃烧完毕我的热忱，我和公关的关系，剩下“How can I help you?”互惠互利，推不掉的只好出席，关系好的更要抽时间现身，不管写不写得出、来不来得及登。是变得机械化吗？或许。

任何沦为公式，没有惊喜，或是什么大惊小喜我都略微看过了。Launch after launch, lunch after lunch，我又学到什么？答案让我不安，很想逃。

这个10年变得太快，我们岂能追上未来的步伐。在这里5年，有阴郁，有快乐，有憧憬，有冲劲，也有失落。真的“去那里工作都一样吗？”我现在在找一个新的起点。或许，日后会不顺遂，但离开是我对得起自己最好的选择。我，还是那个很喜欢写东西发泄心中想法的女生，只是日后或许会转换别的平台与读者见面，分享资讯。

See no Evil 眼不见为净，人们都这样说。

几年前访问过一名失明的女教师。她思想乐观，接见人时笑脸迎人。哪里像我年纪小小，却总是唉声叹气，好像全世界欠了我什么似的。

我之前常觉得高度近视和闪光的我，最怕的就是失去视觉，不能旅行，看不到其他国度里的风景。和她接触后，我明白了：我们也可以把不幸转化成力量。像失明老师所说的，她完成NUS学业每一步都非常困难，但她现在结了婚，还怀了第二个孩子。他们的生活和其他工作人士无异，自食其力。“We are left with no choice，”她说。

我有choice,可是我却悲观、有时不屑一顾，甚至是消极到不行。四肢健全的我不可以这样。

在她小小的课室里，我看到了孜孜不倦的学生，老师开心地辅助教导学题，我当时打从心底微笑了，很久没有那么真心又不经意的莞尔。就算世界是漆黑的，他们脸上还是挂着笑容。

没有选择不是最惨的，惨的是，明明可以选择，却选择最坏的打算，把原本正的路走歪了。

不要悲哀，太阳继续为我们升起。

笑一个，这个世界没有欠我们什么。也没有了不起的人或事可以打击我们。

my last piece of work with MY PAPER-Beauty published today

I like this piece of work a lot, because it was an investigative feature on Preservatives in Skin-care, and my research started in April 08 when I visited a lab in France, when the scientist told us that paraben is actually harmless to the skin and not much evidence points to the cancerous linkages.

When I got back, I always wanted to do this story, so I asked the National Skin Centre (thanks to Ying Lei's contact, she has left SPH too) and several beauty brands-- Origins, Kiehl's, Clarins and Shiseido whose emphasis was on natural ingredients. At that point, Bosia (Fancl) just launched in Sephora stores, so the interview with the brand's GM got the story going.

Hope that I still get to do such stories in the future. And I hope you enjoy it too.

He has been doing my hair for the last 3 years, and has given me so many different styles I never dreamt of, and he has never repeated any hairstyles. My personal beauty magician!

He did a good job covering my stick-out ears (hair length till earlobe), and gave me a slope on the back with razored end that I can't resist touching the back of my head every now and then to feel the spikey hair ends, and a soft front with long fringe so I can texturise my hair in the day for work :D

review:
For once, I am very proud of Singapore and our local drama and musical talents. Kudos to the director Loretta Chen (sister of artiste Chen Zhi Cai) and singing sensation Laura Fgyi.

Men-women-men-women, a mix of identity, interwined with a love tale, and embedded with witty and hilarious gay puns that set me rolling with laughter. And this is the only theatre/ musical production I watched locally that did not send me to slumberland (Ok, I only fell sleep for 15 mins and missed the scene where they fell in love at Cassell's, darn.). The others like CATS and Chitty-Bang-Bang were more of kids' show and yea, I slept soundly in the comfort of the aircon theatre.

I think the well-furnished sets, dazzling costumes (*heart * Victorian fashion) and draperies, well-cheographed songs and dances deserve your attendance. Never mind that ST gave a not so brilliant review for such a brilliant show is not justifiable in my opinion.

Like a friend's friend who said, watching theatricals is very subjective. And I liked what I saw so much, that I am going to help by exercising i-WOM. I sms-ed all my gay friends immediately and asked them to go see it.

Ends 29 Nov. Productions by Zebra Crossing. Oh, and as the show is running in the theatres, Loretta is away in a developing country building homes for the unfortunate children. A very confident lady to leave her show behind and let it run without her!

I look forward to their next remake of the classics.

I was a stand-in for a friend who was sick, unintentionally becoming one of the five covergirls for this maiden issue. I enjoy glamourous photo-shoots, and seeing myself appear on glossy paper. One of my childhood dream is to be a Covergirl.

The issue's topic on Skin Immunity, worth a read!

Post-party thoughts: I had fun catching up with Shiseido, L'Oreal friends, and media-mates & their spouses-to-be @ ZOUK's Men We Love party. I haven't socialised with familiar faces from the beauty and media industry for a long time, and I stayed till 1.30am which was a rare feat. And yes, I went work at 9.30am eight hours later, and still fresh.

荷兰阿姆斯特丹可是说是美丽天使与堕落天使交错的城市，有着悠久古朴的荷兰人传统历史，又是性开放的城市，冲突中显示强烈的对比。

游走在春天的阿姆斯特丹街头，深感这座文明城市的朴实和简单。路人乘坐通往整座市中心的数十条电缆车，下班的行人和爱尝鲜的游客骑着简单的脚车，悠悠地从学校或办公室赶回家。

阿姆斯特丹一共拥有160多条大小水道，由1000余座桥梁衔接起整座城市，每座都编有自己的号码。阿姆斯特丹得名是因为市中心的水坝广场(Dam square)，就是由最早达到这片土地的冒险家建造而成的的第一道水坝为基础而发展起来的城市。

有闲情还可以游船河，观赏风景线，供上下站可停靠游览路上的博物馆。一桥一景，一步一喜。你永远看不够河道两侧的景色，也永远不会对这座城市产生乏味的情绪。

荷兰成就了不少举世闻名的大业，如飞利浦、ING集团、ABN-Ambro银行等，生意网络遍布全球。而荷兰首都正是阿姆斯特丹。阿姆斯特丹位于艾瑟尔湖西南岸，人口74万人。

阿姆斯特丹市中心保留了许多沿河而建的砖瓦运河屋（canal house），不见现代摩天大楼的踪影，可见她的保存历史建筑物方面做得非常用心。这些历史悠久、没有被现代大楼吞噬的古建筑，也在在成了它的旅游资本，吸引游人游览它如童话般可爱和梦幻的砖瓦建筑。

想到阿姆斯特丹旅游之为了两大原因――这里是二战不幸丧命犹太族少女安妮•弗兰克（Anne Frank）和世界知名画家樊纲（Van Gogh）的出生地。这孕育了在我心中这座城市最纯真正直的一面。

一抵达安顿好，我就迫不及待到Van Gogh Museum参观馆藏的700幅作品，可说是全世界收藏最完整的美术馆之一。后印象派画风鼻祖樊纲生前狂狷潦倒，靠当卖画商的弟弟Theo救济，离开荷兰到法国巴黎发展，不料独特的画风无法获得认同，28岁拾起画笔至37岁自杀身亡，只卖出一幅画。

大部分的遗作由弟弟保管，当博物馆在1973年开馆时，他把500幅绘图、200幅油画和逾700封信捐给了博物馆。拥有艺术的天才樊纲虽然起步迟，但非常高产，一生中画了1200幅绘图和900幅油画。

我看到他初期的写实派画风“The Potato Eater”和后期印象派的“Yellow House in Arles”、太阳花系列和自画像，感动之余，细心研究他的笔触和层叠起的色泽。在博物馆外是小公园竖了“I AMsterdam”字样的巨型立体标志，爬上标志照相就是到荷兰的最佳见证。

看完画，心情一转，带着沉重的情绪走进犹太少女安妮•弗兰克生前的遗居。居所是一栋三层楼半的运河屋，13岁的安妮在1942年住进寓所的顶楼躲避反犹太主义的德国纳粹。一道可旋转的书橱匿藏着秘密阁楼的出口，把她从学校和朋友隔离开来。她住到1944年8月，全家人被纳粹抓到集中营里；她在1945年3月，即解放前的3个星期，不幸患恶疾去世。

她在阁楼度过2年多的青春岁月，靠写日记抒发情绪，一篇篇文章记录她听到窗外炮火声和思绪起伏都收录在日记中。我在念书时阅读过《少女安妮•弗兰克日记》，被她生动的文笔触动。

穿过旋转书橱、站在她睡过的门窗封锁房间、看她用餐的狭小厨房、和使用过的简陋厕所，日记中的情节历历在目，让人感叹战火摧残的残酷与遗憾。这里可说是阿姆斯特丹最著名的运河屋，每年吸引90万人挤入矮窄的楼梯间，岂能错过。

童心未泯的你可以考虑参观欧洲陆地上历史最悠久的Artis动物园，就在市区内。这座动物园也是全世界最三悠久的动物园，在1882年建成，最酷的是里头有一个室内雨树林和精彩的鳄鱼喂食活动。

参观了动物园，可以步行15分钟到火车站和海港附近的Nemo科学馆，是荷兰最大型的科学馆，可以让小孩和成人随意碰触展示品，通过体验学习科技原理。就算不想看展览，登上二楼的观望台可欣赏到阿姆斯特丹全景。建筑外形有如绿色舰艇，由同样设计巴黎Centre Pompidou现代艺术馆的意大利建筑师Renzo Piano设计，概念是沿着车道坐落着“舰艇”，非常逗趣。

从这里搭船或坐电车，可抵达一个世界首创的Ijburg的住宅社区建筑项目。从2001年开始建，设计现代的住宅门前是河道，一共沿着7座岛屿建了1万8000栋住宅，由Borneo岛屿和 Sporenburg岛屿衔接成的住宅最早落成。整个社区工程在2012年建成时将有学校和坟场，让居民这生不必离开自给自足的岛上。

见识了阿姆斯特丹的内涵和历史足迹，到火车总站和市中心Dam Square之间的红灯区绕一圈。荷兰是海事强国，停靠的海员登陆，形成了卖性的场所，地点相当靠近华人区。

一个个玻璃橱窗里站着不畏寒、身穿着三点式泳装或暴露服饰的青楼女子，是这座城市放纵使坏的展现。游客当作是有趣的参观无伤大雅，但走进花柳巷可别举起相机拍照。沿街可走进情趣用品店或付费参观私人办的性爱博物馆。据说，以前阿姆斯特丹的毒品管制松散，毒品销售猖獗，不过现在已经严罚管制了。

讽刺的是，红灯区就在1306年建成的古教堂Oude Kerk的前方，1452年的一场大火烧光了教堂周围的建筑物，唯独教堂幸免，屹立至今。

爱泡夜店的你可到The Supper Club狂欢，这里是该夜店餐饮集团的发源地；特色是拥有百色沙发床让你慵懒躺下享受饮料，配合强劲的舞曲电音音乐。

如果赶得上3月中至5月中旬的花季，一定要在离开Schipol机场一小时接驳车车程的Keukenhof郁金香和风车花园，让自己沉醉在花海之中。木鞋是荷兰服饰中最著名的特点，因为800多年前，皮鞋是达官贵人独享的奢侈品，而老百姓会在农闲的冬季制造经久耐用的木鞋。旅客可参加郊外旅行团参观木鞋制作厂。看过木屐和风车，少不了购买纪念品回去。

阿姆斯特丹的魅力在于可融性高。去过一些欧洲城市，至今发现荷兰人的英语掌握能力最强，也最亲切友善。找不到方向迷了路，赶街的路人或停靠路边休息的巴士叔叔会细心指路。离开阿姆斯坦那天，答应自己，有一天我要继续发现荷兰，到其他城市Utrecht和Rotterdam去，感受她融旧于新的建筑特色和有趣的风土民情。

I watched his 1st film alone, prob in 2006 early part...He is a sociologist/ anthropologist.

2. In his film , he satires and ridicules the Bush II administration. When 911 happened and the Twin Tower was bombed, he was visiting a kindergarten and delayed response. I really have a low opinion of this man who is using taxpayers' money to enjoy the perks of a President.

3. I rem watching this with Cyn on the distressing aspects of US Health system which was the exact content of the Health Bill dat is under-going House passing of bill for the Reform *wow*.

4.Just watched this over the weekend, I was the one who picked it. Talking about Capitalism in Goldman Sachs style dat lead to the downfall of the econ, sub-prime and dark dealings in the US Treasury. Moore's answers were "Democracy", and refuted Socialism. Middle-class Socialism is my ideal model-- I say. I rem my soci uni teacher telling us about the Swiss democratic model-- high GDP and yet they enjoy multi-party Demo governance. For US case, it is not so much about lack of democracy-- look at how Obama was elected-- but the problem was, is the govt's point of view siding with the plebeian or the patricians (I picked up these terms from Coriolanus script that I finally finished translating and spent 10 hrs yest formatting, no joke, could feel I was gg blind)?

"Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students...?"

"Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me, I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the “Test of Three."

"Test of Three?"

"That's correct," Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my student let's take a moment to test what you're going to say.

The first test is “Truth”. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man replied, "actually I just heard about it."

"All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of “Goodness”.

Is what you are about to tell me about my student something “Good?"

"No, on the contrary..."

"So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?"

The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued, "You may still pass though because there is a third test - the filter of “Usefulness”.

Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"

Respect Writers

Since I left the press, I went into freelance writing as a natural course. Work has been ad-hoc and not sustainable, luckily I have a full time job, else I would have starved.
I find that here, I don't know about elsewhere publication scene in the world, does not pay writers due respect and fees.

They think that if they have a budget, they rather pay for good photographs (as a picture conveys a thousand words) and design for their logos, layout etc.... but they refused to pay a good price for a translator or copywriter. Sucks.

I wish to enlighten all that, a world is not communicating sense if there are no writers. And a writer's value lies in his/her ability to research, takes time to understand the context/ purpose and targeted audience of the writing, man-hours put in to craft, conceptualise and structure the story. It takes skills, time, experience and creativity.

Are we not worth than the lens-men and designers? I think not. So if others can charge exorbitant rates, writers can demand good rates too, and not try to quote lower, lower, and ...the margin is diluted.

My fashion designer friend also experiences the same misfortune,her colleague asked her to design her wedding gown (probably for free), and she accepted out of formality. She regretted it now and wants to pull out. So, when you ask someone for free write-up or design or free service, think twice, you are usurping his/her waking hours and creativity to do "work" for you, and why should she?

I am going to stand firm on my pricing from now on-- even the most meagre-paying editorial work! I will only write stories that can help me in contact-building or profiling, since I have a choice to commit my hours to it or not, based on what value I see in the price. And I ever thought of bundling all my freelance writer friends-- which I have about 6 to 7 at the moment, and lobby for our rights.

RESPECT our craft, our originality, ideas, creativity; hence our value, and our price.

Only when we are respected, can the world be a better and more communicable place.

So respect writers, and respect my value.
